About Dr Jennifer Hind

Personal Profile

Dr Jennifer Hind is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, specialising in vitreoretinal and cataract surgery. Based primarily at the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology at Gartnavel General Hospital and Stobhill Hospital, she provides care for patients with acute and chronic vitreoretinal conditions, diabetic retinopathy and cataract. Her practice encompasses the assessment, surgical management and ongoing care of patients with a broad range of complex ophthalmic needs.

She trained at leading UK ophthalmology centres, completing her initial specialist training in the west of Scotland before undertaking two years of advanced vitreoretinal fellowship training. She completed one year at the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology, and the second at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, where she gained additional experience in highly specialised vitreoretinal care.

Her work at these leading centres gave her extensive experience in managing complex cataract and vitreoretinal conditions across a variety of clinical settings. Dr Hind provides compassionate, patient-centred care and takes time to understand each patient’s circumstances, concerns and priorities. Through open, clear communication, she aims to ensure that patients understand their condition and treatment options, feel comfortable asking questions and remain fully involved in decisions about their care.

Throughout her career, she has combined high-quality clinical care with a sustained commitment to postgraduate education, surgical training, research and service development. These complementary areas of work allow her to contribute not only to the treatment of individual patients, but also to the continuing development of ophthalmic practice and the support of colleagues and trainees.

Dr Hind’s main clinical interests include vitreoretinal surgery, diabetic retinopathy and cataract, and she has substantial experience in managing complex retinal conditions. She has contributed to research on innovative surgical techniques, including the use of secondary intraocular lenses, as well as work examining virtual postoperative clinics following vitreoretinal surgery. This research reflects her interest in practical innovation that can strengthen the delivery of safe and effective care.

Medical education and surgical training are central to Dr Hind’s professional work. During her ophthalmology training in Scotland, she helped to develop and evaluate simulation-based surgical education as a structured way for trainees to build skills. She remains committed to educational approaches that support deliberate practice and safe progression in surgical training.

She teaches ophthalmology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a particular focus on practical surgical skills, simulation and trainee development. She leads the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ surgical skills and simulation subcommittee and serves on the simulation faculty for their skills courses. She has also contributed to specialist, faculty-led training in areas including vitreoretinal surgery and scleral buckling.

Alongside her clinical and educational roles, Dr Hind maintains an active academic profile. Her publications cover vitreoretinal surgery, ophthalmic simulation, service innovation and emerging technologies, and she regularly peer-reviews academic papers. Her work supports evidence-based improvements in patient care, clinical services and ophthalmic training.

Dr Hind combines specialist ophthalmic practice with extensive involvement in teaching, NHS postgraduate training, surgical simulation, research and service development. Across these roles, she brings together clinical experience, educational leadership and an interest in innovation. She is particularly focused on translating emerging evidence and new approaches into practical improvements that benefit patients, strengthen ophthalmic services and support the education of future ophthalmologists.
