About Dr Jean Ayer

Personal Profile

Dr Jean Ayer is an award-winning, UK-trained Consultant Dermatologist and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at The University of Manchester. She is on the GMC specialist register and works in the NHS in both Manchester and Cheshire. She is trained in Paediatric and Adult Dermatology.

She works as a substantive Consultant in Dermatology at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, and also at Vernova Health Care, Macclesfield.

She graduated from Imperial College, London, with MBBS and BSc(Hons) in Medical Management and spent her elective research period at The University of California after being awarded 2 British Association of Dermatology prizes and 2 further elective grant awards. This allowed her to publish and present her research internationally as an undergraduate.

After her general medical training in several of London’s leading teaching hospitals, she undertook her Dermatology training in Manchester. During this time, she gained her Medical Doctorate (MD) at The University of Manchester. Her thesis, in the field of photoaging, gained The University of Manchester 'Postgraduate Research Prize' for the best PhD/MD presentation. She is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP).

She is an Academic Advisor for medical students at The University of Manchester. She is heavily involved in the design and development of the dermatology curriculum for registrars and photodermatology fellows for The British Association of Dermatologists.

Dr Ayer is well-published and is frequently asked to speak at national and international meetings. She was recently recognised as one of the lead consultants in the prestigious BMJ 'Dermatology Team of the Year' in Vernova Healthcare, Macclesfield.

Dr Ayer sees all aspects of medical and surgical dermatology and all age groups.
