Mr James Barnes is a consultant surgeon who specialises in parathyroid conditions, kidney transplantation, and vascular access for dialysis. He sees private patients at The Priory Hospital in Birmingham and works in the NHS at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire.

He completed his medical degree at the University of Warwick in 2007 and went on to train as a surgeon in the West Midlands. He later spent three years at the Oxford Transplant Centre, where he completed a DPhil (Doctor of Philosophy) at the University of Oxford. His research focused on improving how transplant success is monitored in pancreas surgery.
Mr Barnes has worked as a consultant in several major hospitals, including in Birmingham, Oxford and Coventry. He joined the Birmingham Parathyroid Centre as a partner in 2022. He has particular expertise in treating hyperparathyroidism, including complex cases linked to kidney disease or hormone conditions like MEN, and in performing repeat (redo) operations.

He also carries out laparoscopic donor kidney removal and provides vascular access for dialysis patients, including the creation and repair of fistulas and grafts. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and is a member of professional groups including the British Transplantation Society and the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons.

Mr Barnes is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC No. 6160449) and continues to be active in clinical research, teaching, and surgical training.
