Professor Iskandar Idris is a Professor of Diabetes and Metabolic at the University of Nottingham and Honorary Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton Foundation Trust. Originally a Nottingham University graduate (BMEdSci BMBS), he undertook his general medical training in West Midlands rotation in Birmingham (Health Care of the Elderly, Cardiology, Respiratory, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Oncology & Haematology) and completed his specialist training in 2004 within the Mid-Trent postgraduate deanery in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Medicine. He was a lecturer at the Division of Vascular Medicine, University of Nottingham from 2000-2002, where he undertook a research on Experimental Pharmacology of Endothelial Permeability and Insulin Resistance leading to a Doctor of Medicine degree.

Professor Idris was until recently the Training Programme Director for Specialist Training in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the East Midlands postgraduate deanery and currently regional Specilaity advisor for Diabetes & Endocrinology (East Midlands) a Lead Physician within the East Midlands Bariatric & Metabolic Institute, a regional centre for Bariatric and Metabolic surgery, at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton Foundation Trust and vice Chair of the Academic subcommittee of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologist. He is also a member of the Association of Physician Specialising in Obesity UK (APSO-UK). He is also Associate Editor of the journal Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolism; Lead (world) Editor for Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolism (DOM) NOW and Associate and Section Editor for journals Nutrient, British Journal of Diabetes.

Research:

Professor Idris has ongoing academic and research interests in the field of therapeutic and nutritional aspects of obesity, muscle metabolism and vascular complications of diabetes. Within the University of Nottingham, he is Principal Investigator within the Medical Research Council (MRC)/ Arthritis Research UK Centre for Musculoskeletal Ageing Research; Nottingham NIHR Biomedical Research centre and the Vascular Medicine Research group. He is a principal or co-investigator on various research grants from UK research councils (MRC, BRC), charities (Diabetes UK, UK Research Foundation, National eye research) and industries (Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly, Abbotts) ~ £1.6M. He has published >90 peer-reviewed articles (H-index 36, i10 index 88 and citations >5900 – Google scholar), which included 3 textbooks as editor (Handbook of Diabetes (Wiley publisher); Problem solving in diabetes (Clinical Publisher). Handbook of Bariatric Medicine (Wiley publisher) and 4 invited book chapters. To date (October 2023) he have been principal supervisor to 14 PhD students since 2012 (7 have been awarded PhD and 7 ongoing). He also lectures widely (locally and nationally) in this clinical and research area. He is the school of Medicine lead for pre-clinical medical student teaching in Diabetes and Endocrinology for the University of Nottingham.
