Mr Pagkalos is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon exclusively specialising in hip and knee replacement surgery. His NHS practice is at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, one of five specialist orthopaedic hospitals in the country. He is a member of the British Hip Society, the British Orthopaedic Association and the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA).

He completed his higher surgical training on the Birmingham Orthopaedic Training Programme and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh by examination (FRCS Orth). Following this, he completed two subspecialty fellowships focusing on hip and knee replacements. The first year was at University Hospitals Dorset and the Orthopaedic Research Institute specialising in hip surgery under Professor Middleton. In the second year, he focused on revision joint replacement procedures, joint replacement infection and limb salvage within the world renowned Birmingham Bone Tumour Service.

Mr Pagkalos treats patients with hip and knee arthritis who need joint replacements and patients with malfunctioning joint replacements who may need revision surgery. He also treats patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory arthropathies who need hip and knee replacement surgery and runs a combined NHS clinic with his rheumatology consultant colleagues at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. 

Mr Pagkalos has published extensively in the field of hip and knee replacements as well as general orthopaedics. His research interests include hip replacement longevity and enabling technologies such as computer navigation and robotic-arm assisted joint replacement.
