He went back to St Georges Hospital to do a Sub-specialist Fellowship in Neurosurgery, where he gained experience in all aspects of General Neurosurgery and Neuro-oncology including awake craniotomy, fluorescence guided tumour resection and management of low grade gliomas. After the fellowship he returned to Edinburgh to take up a consultant post at the Western General Hospital.
His operative NHS practice includes management of emergency and elective spinal pathologies including degenerative spine, which makes up 50% of his operative workload, and he consults with around 500 patients a year with back and neck pain in his out-patient clinics.
In addition to General Neurosurgery, Mr Liaquat has a subspecialist interest in brain tumours and leads the Adult Neuro-oncology Surgical service.
Mr Liaquat has a keen interest in the education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students and has completed a Masters in Surgical Education to help him improve his educational skills. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and Clinical Tutor at the University of Edinburgh and has recently been accredited as a Member of the Academy of Medical Educators. In addition, Mr Liaquat has research interests in Neurotrauma, Neuro-Oncology and Surgical Assessment. He has over 15 research paper/abstract publications and has presented at national and international meetings. He is currently actively involved in clinical research in Neuro-oncology with a number of different University Academic departments.
