Dr Ian Stone is a Consultant Physician in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. He takes a very holistic, patient-centred approach which is compassionate and evidence based. He strongly believes in forming partnerships with patients based on respect, accountability and honesty.

He qualified in medicine from Imperial College School of Medicine in 2003 with honours in Physiology and obtaining a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology and Toxicology.  He spent time working at Hospitals considered to be at the forefront of respiratory and sleep medicine including The London Chest, Royal Brompton and Harefield, St Bartholomew’s, The Royal Free, The Royal London and St Mary’s Hospitals.

In 2011-2016 he was awarded a fellowship to undertake research into the effects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a smoking-related lung disease, and its treatment on heart structure and function using advanced imaging techniques including cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The work continues to be presented at international conferences.  It has resulted in multiple peer-reviewed publications and also received awards including from the British Lung Foundation. For this work he was awarded a PhD degree from the University of London.

In his NHS post at Northwick Park and Central Middlesex Hospitals, he manages patients with the entire range of breathing and chest conditions. He is the Clinical Lead at London North West University Healthcare NHS trust for Sleep Medicine (which includes the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea), where he is responsible for the analysis and reporting of over 600 sleep studies annually. Between 2017-2021 He was honoured to have been selected to be part of the NICE guideline development committee for sleep apnoea.  We have now published the related NICE guideline for sleep apnoea.

He has extensive experience of acute, general and emergency medicine.  He is the clinical lead for Oxygen and the Respiratory Clinical Governance lead.  He covers the High Dependency Unit, regularly looking after patients with respiratory failure requiring ventilatory support including those with COVID-related illness. 

He is an experienced bronchoscopist including standard and endobronchial ultrasound guided (EBUS) biopsies. He is responsible for teaching of these techniques to Specialty Trainees.

As a result of his extensive experience as a Consultant Chest and Sleep Physician,  he is consulted about all symptoms related to the lungs including cough, breathlessness, wheezing, sputum, coughing up blood, chest pains, sleep disturbance  and snoring.

He has a very broad scope of practice which includes the management of Sleep apnoea and obesity hypoventilation syndrome. He will personally analyse and report his own sleep studies to ensure the results are accurate and reliable. He manages all forms of asthma including allergic, seasonal, exercise induced and cough-variant. He also manages chronic bronchitis and emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and Lung Cancer, long COVID, lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis, chest infections, pneumonia, tuberculosis (TB), bronchiectasis, pulmonary nodules, pleural disease, pleural effusions, pulmonary embolism, sarcoidosis and pneumothorax.
