About Mr Ian Bayley

Personal Profile

Mr Ian Bayley is a leading Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in shoulder surgery, with a distinguished career spanning over four decades. Recognised as a pioneer in the field, Mr Bayley is known for his expertise in complex shoulder reconstruction, non-operative management of shoulder instability, and innovative approaches to pain and function in shoulder conditions.

In 1980, Mr Bayley was appointed to lead the newly established Spinal Injuries Unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), Stanmore. At the same time, he founded and developed the hospital’s Complex Shoulder Surgery Unit, which has become one of the most respected centres for specialist shoulder care in the UK. His clinical leadership was instrumental in building RNOH’s international reputation for excellence in both spinal and shoulder surgery.

Mr Bayley became the hospital’s first Medical Director two decades ago, later assuming a national leadership role as the NHS Orthopaedic Services Collaborative’s Clinical Chair. He has played a key role in service redesign at a national level, shaping policy and practice across NHS orthopaedic care. Despite these significant strategic roles, Mr Bayley has always remained rooted in front-line clinical practice, working directly with patients across the entire care pathway—from acute injury to rehabilitation and reintegration.

A founding figure in British shoulder surgery, Mr Bayley was one of the original four surgeons who established the discipline as a recognised sub-specialty in the UK. Internationally, he has made a lasting impact through his involvement in the early development of the European Shoulder and Elbow Society and by organising some of the first international shoulder surgery conferences. His contribution to the field has been widely recognised—he has served as President of the British Shoulder and Elbow Society and as a Presidential Guest Speaker of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. He has also been awarded honorary lifelong membership of the society in recognition of his global influence.

Mr Bayley’s clinical interests include the management of scapular dyskinesis, rotator cuff pathology, clavicle injuries, chronic shoulder pain, and revision shoulder arthroplasty. He is particularly renowned for his holistic and often non-operative approaches to shoulder instability and pain, treating many patients who have struggled to find relief through conventional methods.

Today, Mr Bayley continues to run a busy private shoulder surgery practice, combining his vast surgical expertise with a deep commitment to patient-centred care. His long-standing reputation, both in the UK and internationally, makes him one of the most respected and sought-after specialists in complex shoulder conditions.

With a career that bridges hands-on clinical excellence and national service development, Mr Bayley remains at the forefront of orthopaedic innovation—dedicated to advancing shoulder care and improving outcomes for every patient he sees.
