Mr Hugh Wright trained at Oxford University Medical School, where represented the University in Lightweight Rowing 1998-2001, graduating in 2002 with the Robert Duthie Orthopaedics Prize. He completed his Basic Surgical Training in Reading and Oxford, before embarking on a career in Plastic Surgery, working in Hull, Bristol and Plymouth before securing a training post in the Oxford Deanery. Between 2012-16 he carried out Burns Research at Oxford University for which he was awarded a 1-year Royal College of Surgeons of England Research fellowship, a Hunterian Lectureship at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2021, as well as other research prizes.

He completed his Plastic Surgical Training in Manchester before undertaking a competitively appointed hand fellowship in Sheffield 2019-20, and 2 further hand fellowships in Leeds, including the Hand Transplant fellowship. During this time he completed the British Society for Surgery of the Hand Diploma with Manchester University, and was actively involved in teaching and research. He was appointed as a locum consultant in Hand Surgery in Leeds, before taking up a substantive post as a consultant in Nottingham at Queen’s Medical Centre. His surgical interests here are adult hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, children’s hand surgery and lower limb reconstruction.

Outside his clinical work, Mr Wright is an active member of several committees at the British Society for Surgery of the Hand, focussing on training and education, and the hand diploma, and has been a reviewer for the European Journal of Hand Surgery. He is a committed teacher and trainer, and is training to become an examiner for the hand diploma. In his spare time, Hugh enjoys trail running and has completed several ultramarathons along the Pennine Way, and more recently the Bob Graham Round.

Clinical Interest

He offers adult hand surgery for nerve compression conditions such as carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren’s disease, trapeziectomy for thumb-base arthritis, ganglion, and trigger finger surgery. 

He offers surgery for accessory digits (extra fingers and toes), and skin tags around the ears (preauricular skin tags).

He aims to always deliver patient-centre care and ensure that patients are fully informed of their condition, treatment options and are supported throughout their treatment journey.
