Miss Helen Wallace is a Consultant ENT Surgeon at Woodlands Hospital in Darlington. She sees self-pay and insured patients.
She completed her undergraduate medical school training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College in London, graduating in 1995 with MBBS qualification. During her undergraduate medical studies she undertook an additional year of training to study Immunology BSc at University College London and was awarded a 2:1 Honour's degree in 1992.
As a junior doctor, she pursued her interest in ENT surgery and undertook basic surgical training in Wessex before progressing to higher surgical training in ENT in Yorkshire. She completed her ENT training in 2009. She was awarded the gold medal for excellence in the FRCS-ORL examination in 2008, achieving the highest score nationally in the examination.
In 2010, Miss Wallace relocated to the North East to take up a Consultant ENT Surgeon post at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, where she currently undertakes NHS work and is a valued team member. This post involves regular outpatient clinics, operating lists, inpatient care and on-call duties. During her time there, she has introduced a day case operating service at University Hospital of North Durham (UHND), improved paediatric ENT outpatient services and expanded bone anchored hearing aid services across the Trust. She is the Lead Clinician for paediatric ENT services and otology. Miss Wallace has held the post of ENT Clinical Governance Lead at Darlington Memorial Hospital and Clinical Lead for the ENT department.
She is very involved in training the future generation of ENT consultants, acting as Education Supervisor and Trust Representative for Regional ENT Registrar training. Nationally, she is Section Lead in ENT national selection for recruiting future ENT consultants for higher surgical training.
Miss Wallace is a general ENT surgeon and is experienced at undertaking outpatient consultations and ongoing management/operations for a wide range of ear, nose and throat conditions.
She has a specialist interest in otology (ear, hearing and balance disorders) and paediatric ENT. With her specialist interest in ear disorders, she is well placed to provide expert management of acute and chronic ear infections, ear wax management, hearing problems, tinnitus and balance disorders. Miss Wallace works closely with a private audiologist and hearing and balance therapist to offer the best possible service for patients.
She has undertaken weekly private practice clinics at Woodlands Hospital since 2012.
Miss Wallace also offers outpatient procedures, such as ear microsuction for wax, nasal cautery for nosebleeds and Epley maneuver for benign positional vertigo.
