About Ms Helen Doran

Personal Profile

Helen Doran is a Consultant General Surgeon with a sub-specialty interest in Endocrine Surgery.

She also delivers Emergency General Surgery within a Major Trauma Centre, is Clinical Lead for General Surgery and an appraiser. She was appointed to Salford Care Organisation, Northern care Alliance, in 2008 following training in the North-West, North Yorkshire and New Zealand and quickly established a high-volume adrenal, thyroid and parathyroid practice. She also completed a fellowship in Epidemiology at Liverpool University whilst undertaking her MD in Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumours. This additional training developed her skills in multidisciplinary working culminating in setting up a Regional Adrenal MDT.

Helen has been an active member of the British Association Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons (BAETS) throughout her career. Whilst on the BAETS executive council was instrumental in their evolving position on Day Case Thyroidectomy and issue of Covid guidelines.

During her 16 years as a consultant she has promoted training and development of all grades of general surgeons, delivered undergraduate and postgraduate education, led numerous quality improvement activities (particularly whilst Clinical Governance Lead) and adopted new technologies. She has publications in quality journals as both first author and part of collaborative groups.

Clinical Interests

Helen provides specialist management of patients with disorders of thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal conditions, including familial disorders. Best practice care of endocrine patients, many being tertiary referrals, requires joint working with endocrine, radiology and anaesthetic colleagues and collaboration with external centers. Prioritising a direct interface has streamlined referral and care pathways. My subspecialty operative skills are laparoscopic adrenalectomy, thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy. As a consultant I have undertaken over 290 adrenal procedures, 520 thyroid procedures and 670 parathyroid procedures.

She also undertakes elective general surgical procedures such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia repair and lumps and bumps. I am experienced in managing an emergency surgical workload within a Major Trauma Unit. This workload is now intense with an enlarging footprint, new processes for ambulatory care and increasing requirement for trainee supervision.
