About Mr Harvey Sandhu

Personal Profile

Mr Harvey Sandhu is a highly experienced Orthopaedic Hip Surgeon at Bath Clinic. He is also the Senior Consultant who takes the lead in the hip unit at the RUH.

Harvey came to Bath in 1999 and was appointed as a Consultant in Orthopaedics and Trauma surgery at the RUH in 2005. He has a specialist interest in complex hip and lower limb surgery, with the later including complex trauma of femoral and tibial fractures.  He is an authority on Femoral Periprosthetic Fractures around hip replacements, which he was invited to present on at a keynote lecture at The Swedish Hip and Knee Society Meeting in October 2024.

He has also set up the Metastatic Bone Disease (known more commonly as bone cancer) service in the RUH, regarded as gold standard nationally which led to him presenting this service at the British Orthopaedical Oncology Meeting in 2022.

Born in Yorkshire, as a student Harvey read medicine at Magdalene College, Cambridge and undertook specialist training in Orthopaedics and Trauma surgery in London and the South West of England. During his training, he also gained experience at some of the leading centres in North America for Orthopaedics and Trauma, including the world-renowned Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, Harborview Medical Centre, Seattle, and The Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA.

Harvey performs a wide variety of hip procedures tailored to the individual needs of his patients. Harvey favours the Corin prothesis quoting it as one of the best. For this hip replacement, there is the option of a standard hip replacement with highly cross-linked Polyethylene, which will survive many years. Often patients will feedback that the outcome of their surgery has been life-changing, allowing them to return to everyday activities again. He has operated on thousands of hips over the years, each one treated as bespoke because no two hips are the same. Harvey is passionate about optimising outcomes in hip surgery, and is an expert in complex hip constructive revision surgery where he may even use 3D printed patient specific components. In hip replacement surgery the system of artificial implants he uses is one of the highest performing in the Joint Registry data from the UK and other countries, which assess all hip replacements used worldwide. Recent data from the Australian National Joint Registry shows this implant combination to have a 27% lower failure at 10 years as compared to other standard hip replacements.

When you meet Harvey for the first time in the consulting room, you will be welcomed by a caring, empathetic Consultant who wants to learn all about you. He will ask you lots of questions to establish your pain and your lifestyle, but most importantly he will listen to what you have to say so that any treatment solutions he offers are based on the outcome each individual is hoping to achieve.

He is an expert at major complex and reconstructive joint replacement procedures. This includes revision surgery for patients referred with either failed or poorly working hip replacements for which he introduced ‘trabecular metal technology’ to Bath, enabling operations that were not previously possible to be performed. To date, this prosthesis is still used for revision surgery. This type of surgery may also involve reconstructing the pelvis to form a stable environment for the hip joint, delivering long-term good hip function to allow people to walk whereas they may otherwise have been wheelchair-bound.

Harvey is always looking for ways to improve the outcomes for his patients. He finds academia both stimulating and challenging, it enables him to keep up to date in his clinical practice, especially concerning the latest published research and current evidence-based practice. He is well recognised for his expertise, and attends national and international meetings to enhance his learning and to continuously improve his practice. He is also invited to lecture regularly. Indeed as well as his attendance at the prestigious Swedish Hip and Knee Society meeting, he has also presented at the European Hip Society conference in Greece. Harvey shares his passion with new colleagues coming into the profession as he is actively involved in training Orthopaedic surgeons.

Since coming to Bath in 1999, Harvey has been overwhelmed by the support the local community has shown to him. Outside of work, Harvey is focused on his family and fitness and is a keen cyclist, cycling across Kenya for charity. Harvey is passionate about giving something back and works hard to offer support to family, friends, and colleagues. Many of whom have been his patients. As recognition of their gratitude, Harvey has received hundreds of letters and cards as a way of formally thanking him.
