About Mr Harutomo Hasegawa

Personal Profile

Mr Hasegawa is a Consultant Neurosurgeon providing advice and treatment for conditions affecting the brain and spine including back pain, sciatica, disc prolapses, neck pain, brachialgia, hydrocephalus, Chiari malformations and brain tumours, in both adults and children. He also has expertise in surgery for epilepsy, deep brain stimulation and paediatric neurosurgery.

He has an established NHS practice at King's College Hospital, London and Evelina London Children's Hospital, where he has clinics in adult and paediatric general neurosurgery, spinal surgery, epilepsy surgery and functional neurosurgery. He also manages adults and children presenting as emergencies with neurosurgical conditions. He participates in multidisciplinary meetings and has a role in the neurosciences risk and clinical governance team at King's College Hospital.

His private practice is based at the Syon Clinic, Clementine Churchill Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital. He aims to provide pragmatic advice and hopes most of his patients will not need an operation, but he strives to provide high quality surgery when it is needed.

He aims to provide a service which includes:

  • Straightforward advice
  • Realistic discussion of benefits and risks of surgery, if that is an option
  • Multidisciplinary assessment as you would have in the NHS, when indicated
  • Timely correspondence and clinic letters, e-mailed to the patient and GP
  • Onward referral to a suitable specialist for conditions outside my expertise
  • Reducing routine follow-up appointments, instead offering patient-initiated follow-up when needed

Mr Hasegawa qualified in medicine from The University of Glasgow in 2003 and undertook his neurosurgical training in London at King’s College Hospital, St. George’s Hospital and Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre. He has written over 50 publications and has co-authored Oxford Case Histories in Neurosurgery, a popular textbook for neurosurgery trainees. His other interests include cooking and the mind-body relationship.
