Personal Profile

Mr Phillips was born and raised in London and attended the City of London School, going on to Jesus College Cambridge with a Cambridge University Open Exhibition and Alston Science Scholarship.

His undergraduate clinical training was at St. Mary's/Imperial College School of Medicine in London, with early post-graduate training at St. Mary's London and Central Middlesex hospitals, followed by a three-year training scheme at Kingston Hospital, Surrey including Neonatology, Paediatrics, A&E and GP. Mr Phillips specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and spent a year at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital followed by Guys and St. Thomas' Hospital and Tunbridge Wells.

In the early 1990's, Mr Phillips was becoming more interested and skilled in laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery and moved up to Middlesbrough to work as a surgical training fellow to Professor Ray Garry who, at that time, was the leading laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeon in the country. Mr Phillips had every intention of returning South but he and his family loved the North East so much that they decided to stay. Mr Phillips is married with 5 children who have all grown up locally.

He was lucky to be able to learn hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgery right at the start of the development of these surgical techniques, and still have the background training in open surgery. His first operative laparoscopy was in 1992 and his first operative hysteroscopy (endometrial ablation) was in 1994. Mr Phillips has performed many thousands of these operations and was the first surgeon to perform total laparoscopic hysterectomy in the North of England back in 1997. Therefore, he has very extensive expertise and skill with all of the laparoscopic, hysteroscopic and surgical techniques currently available.

Mr Phillips has been training surgeons for over 25 years. Many of the consultants in the North (and elsewhere) have been trained by him. He is the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) preceptor in advanced laparoscopic surgery. Mr Phillips is the only one in the region and one of only 14 nationwide, meaning that he trains very senior doctors (soon to be appointed consultant) in advanced surgical techniques to prepare them for their consultant posts.

He established the RCOG/BSGE (British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy) endometriosis centre at James Cook University Hospital having been treating patients with severe endometriosis for over 20 years. Mr Phillips is the Lead Clinician/Director of the endometriosis centre who are consistently in the top 5 in the UK. Endometriosis surgery can be very difficult, and Mr Phillips serves a lot of severe endometriosis patients. This also means that he is referred many other patients with difficult surgical problems. Many of his patients are "tertiary referrals"  i.e. referrals from other consultants for diagnosis, opinion, and surgery.

Mr Phillips is on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the BSGE and has contributed much to this and to gynaecological research over the years. He receives a lot of referrals for treatment of staff members and medical colleagues. He is very happy to refer on to other consultants when a patient needs particular treatment such as IVF or cancer treatment.

Mr Phillips spent a lot of time at university rowing for Cambridge, and rowed for England and the London University.
