Consultant Gastroenterologist

About Gohar Jalayeri Nia

Personal Profile

Dr Gohar J Nia is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. She qualified as a doctor in 2008, completed specialist training in gastroenterology in 2025 and is registered with the General Medical Council. She holds an MD in research and has a particular interest in capsule endoscopy.

Dr Nia sees patients with a wide range of digestive symptoms, including abdominal pain, reflux, diarrhoea, a change in bowel habit and iron deficiency anaemia. She undertakes gastroscopy and colonoscopy and assesses patients with inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal bleeding. In her NHS practice, she works across outpatient clinics, endoscopy and multidisciplinary services. She collaborates with nursing, radiology, pathology and surgical colleagues when patients need coordinated care.

Her research has focused on colon capsule endoscopy, including a pathway that enabled patients to complete the test at home. She has studied patients’ experiences of this approach and its environmental impact. She has presented her work at national and international conferences and remains active in research. She also works with a European team to develop key performance indicators for colon capsule endoscopy. This work aims to help services measure the quality of the test and identify where patient care can be improved.

Dr Nia is involved in developing NHS capsule endoscopy services, with the aim of improving access to both small bowel and colon capsule investigations. Her work considers the whole pathway, from deciding which patients may benefit and preparing them for the test to reporting results and arranging appropriate follow-up. She has experience of both the clinical and practical aspects of introducing new diagnostic pathways and is interested in making investigations accessible to patients in different settings.

Dr Nia enjoys sharing her experience with colleagues and trainees through teaching. Her work in research and service development has given her opportunities to collaborate with clinicians across hospitals and specialties. She is interested in the ways capsule endoscopy can be used alongside investigations to help answer a patient’s clinical question and guide the next steps.
Her interest in service development grew from her research into how capsule endoscopy can be offered beyond hospital appointments. She is keen to ensure that new tests are introduced with clear clinical standards, appropriate support for patients and a reliable route to further investigation when needed.

Dr Nia understands that digestive symptoms can be worrying, especially when their cause is unclear. She takes time to listen to patients; explain what investigations may be helpful and agree a plan that reflects their symptoms and preferences. Where endoscopy or capsule endoscopy is recommended, she explains what the test involves and how its findings will guide care. Her aim is for each patient to understand the results and know what will happen next.
