Giovanni Mariscalco is a lead clinician for complex aortic and consultant cardiothoracic surgeon with a practice focused on surgery of the aortic root and thoracic aorta. He performed more than 2000 major cardiac operations as responsible surgeon.

 

Training and appointment

Dr Mariscalco received the M.D. degree from University of Insubria (Italy), School of Medicine in 2001. Subsequently, He received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Umeå (Sweden) in 2008 and a subsequent post-graduate doctorate in Surgery and Biotechnology from University of Insubria (Italy) in 2011. Dr Mariscalco completed his clinical fellowship in cardiac surgery at Cardiothoracic Division, Heart Centre, of Umeå University Hospital (Sweden) in 2004 and his residency in cardiac surgery at Varese University Hospital, (Italy) in 2006. He has also been covered the position of Associate Professor of cardiac surgery at University of Leicester and at University of Geon (Italy) during the years 2014 and 2019. Dr Mariscalco is author and co-author of more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and chapters in 8 books. Dr Mariscalco has been a member of editorial boards of medical journals, and has reviewed manuscripts for 30 medical journals. Dr Mariscalco holds now the position of Honorary Associate Professor of cardiac surgery at University of Leicester.

Current Practice

He is working as consultant in cardiac surgery at Cardiac Surgery Unit of Glenfield Hospital, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. He is also the lead clinician for complex aortic surgery and honorary consultant adult congenital heart surgeon. His areas of expertise include bypass surgery, aortic valve repair/replacement and mitral valve repair/replacement, and complex aortic surgery, including complex repairs of aortic root and aortic arch operations.
