About Mr George Ramsay

Personal Profile

Mr George Ramsay is a Clinical Academic and Consultant Surgeon with a special focus on Colorectal and General Surgery. He splits his time between the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Originally from Inverness and raised in Ayrshire, Mr Ramsay graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2007. During his medical studies, he also completed an intercalated degree in Medical Microbiology. 

He began his medical career with foundation posts across several hospitals in Edinburgh, Livingston, Haddington, and Kirkcaldy. He then moved into surgical training in the North of Scotland, gaining experience in Fort William, Elgin, Inverness, and Aberdeen.

Mr Ramsay specialises in a wide range of general and colorectal conditions, including: 

  • inguinal and umbilical hernias
  • aspects of coloproctology
  • surgical treatments for inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal polyps, and colorectal cancer.
  • fully trained in both open and laparoscopic colon and rectal surgeries for both cancerous and benign conditions.

Research and Academic Career

Mr Ramsay developed a strong interest in research early in his career. In 2012, he became a Wellcome Trust Clinical Fellow at the University of Dundee. He completed his PhD in Mucosal Immunology in 2015, where his thesis topic was on Environmental Signals that Control T lymphocyte maintenance in the Gastro-Intestinal Tract. Throughout his research, he continued clinical work to maintain close involvement in patient care.

Following this, he returned to Aberdeen and Inverness to complete his surgical training. He also worked as a SCREDS Clinical Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen.
He was appointed Consultant Surgeon in 2020, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Ramsay is passionate about improving the academic environment for surgical trainees, particularly in the North of Scotland. He sees Aberdeen as a hub of research excellence and is committed to fostering collaboration, research, enhancing surgical quality, and embedding evidence-based practice into everyday care.

He currently serves as the Emergency General Surgical Chair for the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s subcommittee. He’s actively involved in multiple research projects and has authored over 80 widely cited publications.

Having trained and worked in the region for over 15 years, George has built strong connections with fellow specialists across the North of Scotland, helping to ensure the best possible care for his patients.

Clinical Interests

Mr Ramsay’s key areas of focus include Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), colorectal cancer, and benign coloproctology.

He regularly assesses and treats patients experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Abdominal pain
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Pain during bowel movements
  • Haemorrhoids 

Mr Ramsay is trained in both upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy and colonoscopy,

  • Colonoscopy and polypectomy 
  • Haemorrhoid banding, haermorrhoidal banding, suture ligation or haermorrhoidectomy
  • Management of anal fissures and fistulae
  • Surgical repair of hernias
