Gareth Bashir graduated with a degree in Medicine (MBBS) from The Medical College of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1999 with an intercalated BSc in Cardiovascular Medicine from Imperial College. He completed his House Officer posts which included supervision by Consultant Dame Professor Parveen Kumar. After completing an SHO post in the emergency department at the Royal London Hospital Gareth undertook basic surgical training on the Bart’s rotation. This was followed by a year in critical care including trauma.
Gareth then commenced his higher surgical training in the North East Thames region during which he also completed a Masters degree in Surgical Education at Imperial College. He developed an interest in colorectal and minimally invasive surgery. Having successfully passed the FRCS in 2009 he obtained CCT in February 2010. He then completed two post-CCT fellowships in colorectal surgery including a year at the world-renowned St. Mark’s Hospital. He therefore has experience in specialised colorectal surgery (inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure and pelvic floor).
Gareth is fully trained in general and colorectal surgery.
His main foci are:
Hernia surgery (open & laparoscopic) including abdominal wall reconstruction.
Proctology – fistula & haemorrhoid surgery (including THD).
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
Emergency general surgery
Gareth has held the position of both team leader and team player in several settings both within medical practice and also outside medicine.
He helped lead the Welsh Sabre team to the Silver Medal position in the 1994 Commonwealth Games.
Gareth was Field of Play Recovery Team Leader for Fencing at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
He was the Medical Lead for the European Senior Fencing Championships in Strasbourg in 2014 and Toruń in 2017.
Gareth fully supports a collaborative teamwork approach in order to achieve common and desirable goals.
He is a proponent of crew resource management with flat hierarchies which was successfully implemented by the airline industry in the 1980s.
Gareth respects and is fully engaged in the multidisciplinary approach to surgical practice, including the central role of the patient.
Gareth enjoys working with individuals from all disciplines as he understands that forging good relationships results in a better working environment and enhanced outcomes for our patients.
