Dr Barnes is an experienced Consultant Interventional Cardiologist with a broad clinical practice encompassing the full spectrum of general and interventional cardiology. He is recognised for his thoughtful, evidence-based approach to patient care and for his specialist expertise in coronary intervention and aortic valve disease, including the assessment and management of patients who may benefit from transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
Dr Barnes began his medical training at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 2003. During his undergraduate years, he completed an intercalated degree in Genetics, achieving First-Class Honours. Following medical school, he secured a position on the highly competitive Nottingham Senior House Officer rotation, where he completed his general medical training, rotating through a number of medical subspecialties, and obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP).
Motivated by a strong academic interest in cardiovascular disease, Dr Barnes subsequently undertook a period of dedicated research. He was awarded a PhD by the University of Edinburgh after completing an extensive programme of clinical trials and translational studies funded through a prestigious Heart Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellowship. His doctoral research focused on the role of novel hormones in the development of heart failure and on evaluating their potential as therapeutic targets. In the final year of his research training, Dr Barnes continued his work at Imperial College London, concentrating specifically on pulmonary hypertension. Alongside these core areas, his research also explored vascular responses to ischaemia and the biological pathways that influence these processes. The significance and quality of his work led to publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed cardiovascular journals and presentations at major international cardiology conferences.
After completing his higher research degree, Dr Barnes embarked on specialist cardiology training through the North West London rotation. The early years of this programme allowed him to build extensive experience across a wide array of general cardiac conditions. During this period, he achieved full accreditation in transthoracic echocardiography with the British Society of Echocardiography. He then progressed into subspecialty training in interventional cardiology, undertaking advanced fellowships at Harefield Hospital, a renowned centre for complex cardiac intervention.
In 2019, Dr Barnes was appointed as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Ashford & St Peter’s Hospitals in Surrey, UK. His clinical expertise spans general cardiology, diagnostic assessment, and percutaneous coronary intervention. In addition to his coronary work, he has a particular interest in aortic valve disease and plays an active role in the regional TAVI service. He continues to participate in the TAVI programme at Harefield Hospital, contributing to muti-disciplinary team discussion, patient assessments and implanting valves.
Across all aspects of his practice, Dr Barnes is committed to providing compassionate, patient-centred care supported by the latest evidence and interventional techniques. His combined experience in clinical research, advanced imaging, and interventional cardiology enables him to offer comprehensive assessment and personalised treatment to patients with complex cardiac conditions.
