About Mr Gans Thiagamoorthy

Personal Profile

Mr Gans Thiagamoorthy grew up in Surrey, with two sisters, both now GPs, and his mother a retired Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who enjoys charity work and his father a Civil Engineer who enjoys language and philosophy.  He is married with two daughters and enjoys cycling, badminton and puzzles.

Gans gained his medical degree from St. George’s Hospital Medical School.  As all gynaecologists Mr Thiagamoorthy undertook his standard 7 year Obstetrics and Gynaecology training.  He is capable and manages issues such as bothersome menstrual bleeding/periods, post-menopausal bleeding, optimising quality of life during the menopause and vulval concerns.

In addition, he undertook an MD thesis studying urogynaecology and followed this up with urogynaecology subspecialty training which totalled 5 years. The subspecialty training posts are highly competitive as there are only 13 in the country and each position only becomes available every 3 or so years. Mr Thiagamoorthy undertook his subspecialty training in King’s College, London under the aegis of the late Professor Cardozo who is considered the mother of urogynaecology. These extra 5 years focussed purely on Urogynaecology is what sets Mr Thiagamoorthy apart from every other gynaecologist who also does urogynaecology in the area.  This is one of the reasons Mr Thiagamoorthy is the Urogynaecology Lead and receives referrals from most of the gynaecologists in the region when women present with bladder, prolapse or bowel issues. He specialises in the treatment of prolapse and urinary incontinence and is one of the few consultants in the country to be able to offer sacral neuromodulation for urinary incontinence and difficulty voiding in the private sector as well as Urethral Bulkamid for stress incontinence in outpatients as walk in, walk out day case.

Gans has a holistic approach to women’s health and strongly believes that non-surgical therapy should always be offered first. However, when other treatment options are required, he is also capable of offering medical and surgical therapies and explaining the benefits and negatives of these with up to date evidence so that his clients can decide on which options suits their needs best.

Mr Thiagamoorthy has optimised treatment pathways for a number of conditions so from initial review, diagnosis and treatment can be swift, as least invasive and whilst they will never be pleasant, as close to this as he can make possible.

With 18 years of experience as a Gynaecologist and a meticulous interest in understanding the minutiae of this speciality, Gans is keen to ensure complete information is provided to empower women to make informed decisions about their care.  As such, Mr Thiagamoorthy has been the Chair of the Information Committee for the British Society of Urogynaecology to ensure leaflets and information such as the current BSUG website, which he designed, are optimal for women and their loved ones.

Mr Thiagamoorthy has won over 10 national and international prizes for best research to improve women’s health and published widely in highly regarded scientific journals such as the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the International Urogynaecology Journal. He is on the editorial board of Case Reports in Women’s health.  Gans has worked hard to provide the best care possible and this has been recognised with him being invited to lecture nationally and internationally, publish in textbooks and also be specialty lead for undergraduate education.  He is one of only two national trainers for urethral bulking where consultants from around the country come to learn how to optimise their surgeries under his preceptorship.

Mr Thiagamoorthy is the Lead for Urogynaecology and works as a part of an MDT including another urogynaecology consultant, 2 urogynaecology nurses, 10 women’s health physiotherapists, a urologist, a colorectal surgeon and a radiologist.  Urogynaecologists across the region send patients for review and management to this MDT.

Mr Thiagamoorthy is not only the Lead for Urogynaecology but is also the regional Perinatal Pelvic Health Lead working to reduce pelvic floor dysfunction for women during pregnancy, labour and thereafter.  Alongside, Mr Bearn, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, a team of specialist midwives and pelvic floor physiotherapists they run a joined Pelvic floor clinic to review and improve outcomes for women who are suffering with postnatal pelvic floor issues. Some women are referred from across the region with bowel, bladder or vaginal issues many years after traumatic childbirth for help.  This may require conservative care (via physios, midwives, bowel care) or surgery such as simple perineal scar tissue removal or reconstruction to even anal sphincter reconstruction with vaginal reconstruction.
