About Fenella Welsh
Personal Profile
Miss Fenella Welsh is a Consultant Hepatobiliary & General Surgeon working in the The Hampshire Clinic and the NHS. She graduated from Cambridge University and St Mary’s Hospitals Medical School in 1992, before conducting a research fellowship in Leeds and completing her surgical training in London and the South West Thames region. Fenella then undertook two specialist Surgical Fellowships. The first was in Edinburgh, in Hepatopancreaticobiliary and Transplant Surgery. The second was a more focused Liver Surgery Fellowship in Basingstoke, following which she was appointed there as a Consultant Hepatobiliary & General Surgeon in 2005.
Fenella is very patient-focused and always puts her patients first. She is a member of a number of professional organisations and regularly attends and is invited to speak at national and international meetings, ensuring she remains up to date and at the forefront of patient care. She is currently the President-elect of the Great Britain & Ireland Hepato-pancreatico-biliary Association (GBIHPBA), taking over the Presidency in September 2025, having previously served on the Committee. She is current and previous faculty on a number of national training programmes, and patient-safety and quality initiatives, including Improving the Management of Patients with Advanced Colorectal Tumours (IMPACT), and the UK Safe Cholecystectomy Group. She has published extensively and her current clinical and research interests include reducing the risks surrounding complex liver surgery. She also advises the Parliamentary Ombudsman when requested.
Fenella's clinical interests include all aspects of Hepatobiliary surgery, the management of gallstone disease and gallstone surgery, liver cancer and neuroendocrine tumours (NETS). She also has a keen interest in advanced laparoscopic surgery, including laparoscopic gallbladder, biliary and hernia surgery.
