About Mr Felice Granato

Personal Profile

Mr Granato is a Thoracic Surgeon with international experience across Italy and the United Kingdom.

He graduated in Medicine with honours at The University of Naples, Italy, in 2005, and specialised in Thoracic Surgery at The University of Siena, Italy in 2010. He has worked in the United Kingdom since October 2010 when he fully registered on the GMC specialist register for cardiothoracic surgery. Mr Granato was recognised with Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) of London in 2013. He graduated with a PhD in Oncology and Genetics in 2015 at University of Siena, Italy.

Mr Granato has worked as a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon in the United Kingdom since April 2014, and at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust as permanent consultant since February 2017. He is now the Clinical Lead for Thoracic Surgery at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

He has performed over 4000 thoracic surgical procedures, and is the leading surgeon at MFT for minimally invasive surgery. Mr Granato recently introduced single incision minimally thoracic surgery and 70% of his surgical practice is carried out with this approach. To date, he has performed over 700 VATS lobectomies, and he hopes to further expand his minimally invasive practice in the future with new technologies including robotic surgery, and to continue to grow his research portfolio.

Mr Granato has contributed to streamline patients’ pathways to improve their care and was awarded with a 'Clinical Excellence Award' by Manchester University NHS Trust in June 2019. He is the Trust Training Specialty Lead for Thoracic Surgery, Audit and Clinical Governance Deputy Lead, Medical Student Experience Lead and Foundation Programme Educational Supervisor for Manchester University NHS Trust.

Mr Granato is a keen researcher and to date, has published 27 peer-reviewed original articles. He is a co-founder of the largest UK thoracic research group (North West Thoracic Surgery Collaborative, NWTSC) which he represents for Wythenshawe. He is the Chairman of NCORR (NWTSC steering committee), an active member of the multi-million pound research project TRACERx (TRAcking Cancer Evolution through therapy (Rx)) lung which will transform our understanding of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and take a practical step towards an era of precision medicine. The study will uncover mechanisms of cancer evolution by analysing the intratumour heterogeneity in lung tumours from approximately 850 patients and tracking its evolutionary trajectory from diagnosis through to relapse. At £14 million, it’s the biggest single investment in lung cancer research by Cancer Research UK, and the start of a strategic UK-wide focus on the disease, aimed at making real progress for patients.

He is conscious of the fact that the lung cancer resection rate in the UK is below the European average, and he constantly strives to increase this percentage through improving surgical techniques, enhancing post-operative recovery, optimising patient pathways and exploring new sources of referral. He is part of a team of like-minded colleagues to achieve world class results both at clinical and academic level.
