Personal Profile

Mr Tsialogiannis is an Orthopaedic Consultant who specialises in hip surgery, with a sub-specialist interest in minimally invasive hip replacement, fast-track day surgery and cutting-edge techniques in orthopaedic trauma surgery.

Training and Appointment

Educated at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Medical School in Greece, Mr Tsialogiannis graduated from the Hellenic Military Academy of Combat Support Officers in 2002. He spent eight years as a military consultant in the 401 General Army Hospital, a Level I trauma centre specialising in complex trauma and gunshot injuries. He was recognised for his technical skills and awarded with the Military Merit Medal.

He is a uniquely qualified surgeon with two postgraduate fellowships in centres of excellence across the world.

Mr Tsialogiannis spent a year at the largest arthroplasty venue in Canada, Sunnybrook Science Centre in Toronto.  Under the mentorship of world-renowned experts, Dr Hugh Cameron, Dr John Cameron and Dr Jeff Gollish, he actively contributed to primary, complex, and revision hip and knee replacements.

Evangelos focussed his research on pioneering fast track techniques in adult reconstruction, day case hip replacements and specific intraoperative pain protocols, all aiming to enhance postoperative patient outcomes.  He has a sub-speciality focus on minimally invasive hip replacement techniques, offering his patients the posterior Spaire Approach and the anterior hip replacement (also known as AMIS).

Mr Tsialogiannis received training on the SPAIRE approach from the pioneers of this method at the Exeter Hip Unit, Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre in Exeter, UK. And for the Anterior (AMIS) approach, Evangelos gained expertise at esteemed European centers in Greece and Belgium.

With both techniques, patients usually experience faster recovery, less pain, and a quicker return to normal daily and athletic activities.

Prizes and Awards

Mr Tsialogiannis has been awarded the Military Merit Medal. He is knighted into the Order of the Phoenix, an honour bestowed by the Greek government to Greek citizens who have excelled in the arts and literature, science, public administration, shipping, commerce, and industry.   In 2004, Evangelos received the Golden Cross, one of five classes in the Order.  He is also decorated with the United Nations Metal Award, for serving in the UN’s peace keeping mission under the NATO command in Yugoslavia.

Current Practice

Mr Tsialogiannis is one of a few surgeons who efficiently combines established orthopaedic techniques with new technologies, innovative surgical methods (MIS) and cutting-edge research, alongside more than 15 years of trauma experience.

He uses the posterior SPAIRE approach, which preserves crucial muscles, particularly the short external rotators at the back of the hip.  This can minimise the need to cut muscles in the hip area, thereby maintaining its natural stability and reducing the risk of dislocation post-op.  It's a minimally invasive approach, which also results in less tissue damage, potentially faster recovery times and less pain for patients after the surgery.

The Anterior Hip Replacement is a surgical technique that involves accessing the hip joint from the front of the body. Whereas traditional approaches may require cutting through muscles and tendons, the anterior approach allows the surgeon to work between muscle groups, minimising tissue damage.

Again, there is less trauma to the muscles, leading to a potentially faster recovery, less pain after the operation, improved stability and less scarring.  Patients may find that they can bear weight on the hip earlier in the recovery process, promoting a faster return to normal activities.  The preservation of tendons and muscles can also contribute to improved gait and reduced risk of post-operative limping.
