About Ms Esther Marchant

Personal Profile

Esther qualified from Sheffield Hallam University with an Honours degree in Physiotherapy in 2002. Following completing junior rotations in London, Esther went on to gain 4 years’ experience working across musculoskeletal outpatients and orthopaedics, before specialising as a hand therapist in 2009.Working as a hand physiotherapist in the hand unit at St Georges Hospital, major trauma centre in London Esther gained a wide breadth of experience in the treatment of hand and wrist conditions including complex trauma, tendon repairs, acquired conditions and chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis, sports injuries and hand and wrist trauma.

Esther has been working as a hand therapist at the Alexandra hospital since 2015. She is the team lead for hand therapy at the Alexandra and is experienced at treating patients across the full spectrum of hand therapy problems.  This includes following procedures like carpal tunnel, joint replacements, dupytrens fasciectomy, trigger finger, traumatic hand and wrist injuries, tendon repairs, wrist surgery and plastic reconstructive work.

Esther also has considerable experience of rehabilitation with non-surgical problems such as finger , thumb and wrist injuries, sports injuries and hand arthritis. Esther collaborates with the team of hand surgeons at the Alexandra to ensure a smooth process for her patients. She works very closely with Mr Zaf Naqui, Consultant hand and wrist surgeon. Their collaboration includes joint multidisciplinary team clinics, creating a joined-up approach for patients. Esther is also particularly involved with care of patients following the innovative thumb base joint replacement, which Mr Naqui is one of the key pioneers of in our region.

In her hand therapy clinics, Esther carries out wound care, scar treatment and management, soft tissue massage and electrotherapy. She also offers a wide range of splinting options such as bespoke thermoplastic and neoprene splints, management of swelling, and prescribing tailored exercise programmes for her patients. Esther is able to assist people with stiff joints or loss of range of movement with hands-on skills such as wax therapy and joint mobilisations.

Esther regularly attends professional courses to update her clinical knowledge and skills this includes attendance at BAHT (British Association of Hand Therapists) meetings for the North west, national hand conferences and BAHT affiliated courses.
