Dr Edward Sames is a Consultant Rheumatologist and General Physician based at Ashford and St Peter's NHS Trust in Surrey.

Training and Appointment

After obtaining his degree in Medicine from Bart’s and The London Medical School in 2009 he carried out his houseman training at Kingston and Royal Surrey County Hospitals before going on to train in Rheumatology and Medicine in hospitals throughout the London and Surrey area. He was appointed as a Consultant at St Peter's in 2018 and has worked there ever since.

Dr Sames also has a Masters in Immunology from Imperial College London where he worked on one of the antibodies now used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.  He has remained active in research since then and is currently a Principal Investigator on an ongoing trial at St Peter's Hospital. He has published several case reports and has presented at conferences in the UK and Europe. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians.

Current Practice

As a Rheumatologist, Dr Sames can diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Fibromyalgia, Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR), Gout, Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis and rarer conditions such as Lupus and Vasculitis. In addition, his work as an active General Physician allows him to address the various medical issues which are often associated with rheumatological disease. Many Rheumatology conditions can be complex and often involve clear communication and joint decision-making, both of which are provided by Dr Sames in his practice.

As a General Physician he is involved with caring for patients on the wards at his NHS base, and he also provides care for a wide variety of medical conditions.

At St Peter's, Dr Sames has set up a variety of services to improve patient care. He has developed the rheumatology transition service with the paediatric team which ensures that young adults with rheumatological conditions such as Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis are seamlessly transferred from paediatric to adult services and ensures that their treatments are optimised, and other issues are addressed. Dr Sames has also set up the local guidelines for management of Giant Cell Arteritis and has been involved in setting up the Early Inflammatory Arthritis Service at St Peter's Hospital.

He has been a club doctor for a local football team and has a specialist interest in diagnosing and treating a range of musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries, having completed a postgraduate Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine at the University of South Wales. He can provide a variety of soft tissue and joint injections. He works closely with other healthcare professionals including Orthopaedic Surgeons, Pain Specialists, Physiotherapists and Podiatrists to ensure patients are managed holistically.

Education and Teaching

Dr Sames also enjoys teaching and has a Royal College of Physicians Educator Accreditation. He continues to be actively involved in teaching both Medical Students and other Junior Doctors he works with, working as both an Educational and Clinical Supervisor.
