About Mr Edward Courtney

Personal Profile

Mr Courtney completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Leeds, qualifying in 1996. He carried out his basic surgical training in Hull, Canterbury and London before taking up a research post at St George's Hospital, London.  It is was during his time here that Mr Courtney completed a thesis on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on the colon in patients with colorectal polyps. He presented his results at the Digestive Disease Week meeting in Chicago, USA in 2005.

Higher surgical training was undertaken in East Anglia, including Addenbrooke's Hospital and the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. He was awarded his certificate of completion of training in 2011 and went on to undertake a 1 year Surgical Fellowship at Auckland City Hospital, where he received further advanced training in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, and the assessment and management of complex pelvic floor disorders.

Mr Courtney was appointed as a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at the RUH in October 2012. He is committed to providing the best possible care for his patients and always take time to explain any proposed treatment as clearly as possible.

  • Primarily a specialist in laparoscopic and colorectal surgery, and also fully trained in all aspects of general surgery
  • Regularly performs open & laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (UC and Crohn's disease) & pelvic floor disorders
  • Performs colonoscopies, having been trained to a very high standard,
  • Completed a Doctor of Medicine Degree in the chemoprevention of colorectal cancer. Mr Courtney remains very interested in clinical research
