Personal Profile

Mr Duncan Scrimgeour is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary who specialises in the treatment of benign and malignant colorectal conditions and simple and complex abdominal wall hernias. He performs both minimally invasive and open surgery and over 500 diagnostic (including bowel screening) and therapeutic colonoscopies per year. 

He has helped to develop the complex abdominal wall reconstruction service in Aberdeen that provides life changing operations for patients with large abdominal wall hernias. He is also part of the complex colorectal polyp team that offers colonoscopic excision of complicated colorectal polyps.

Mr Scrimgeour has a background in basic science research and has previously investigated the prognostic significance of specific genes involved in the development of colorectal cancer. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Anatomy and Physiology from the University of Dundee and was awarded a Masters of Science degree in Oncology from the University of Nottingham for his research on ‘High Throughput Molecular Profiling of Colorectal Cancer’. 

He studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen and graduated with Commendation in 2010. In 2015, Mr Scrimgeour was appointed as the first ever Intercollegiate Research Fellow for the four Surgical Royal Colleges of Great Britain and Ireland. The research conducted during this role led to Mr Scrimgeour being awarded a PhD in Medical Education from the University of Aberdeen in 2019. His work in Medical Education was formally recognised when he was enrolled as a Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Edinburgh. He completed higher surgical training in the North East of Scotland and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2020. Mr Scrimgeour was awarded the prestigious North of England (Newcastle) Colorectal fellowship in 2021 and gained extensive experience in minimally invasive colorectal surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction.  

Mr Scrimgeour has many publications in peer reviewed journals and has co-authored several book chapters including the anterior abdominal wall and inguinal region in Gray’s Surgical Anatomy. 

He has been invited to speak at many national and international meetings and regularly teaches UK and international consultant colleagues and senior trainees on advanced abdominal wall techniques to repair large abdominal wall hernias. Mr Scrimgeour also helps to co-ordinate and run several hernia courses throughout the year as part of his role as an Education and Training sub-committee member of the British Hernia Society.

More recently, Mr Scrimgeour has become a faculty member of the National Endoscopy Training Programme (NETP) which has been established to improve colonoscopy quality to help minimise repeat procedures and improve patient experience.
