He spent 2 years at University College London developing a method for the diagnosis of bladder cancer for which he was awarded the Guy Baines Medal. His higher urological training was completed in the West Midlands with additional training at the Urology and Nephrology Centre in Mansoura, Egypt. He was appointed as consultant urological surgeon at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire in April 2012 with a special interest in prostate and bladder cancer. As lead clinician for clinical governance he is committed to continuous monitoring and improvement of surgical outcomes.
As deputy chair of the Arden Urology Network Site Specific Group he is responsible for the coordination of urological cancer services throughout Warwickshire.
Mr MacDonald's current research interests include realtime USS and MRI fusion for the diagnosis of prostate cancer, the role of Vitamin D in bladder cancer, the use of eNoses for the diagnosis of bladder cancer, analgesia for TRUS biopsy, the use of computer aided decision support systems in prostate cancer follow-up and information needs in prostate cancer survivors.
