Mr Dinesh Rathod graduated from the University of Manchester in 1999. During his undergraduate studies, he was ranked 5th nationally in the prestigious Royal College of Ophthalmologists Duke-Elder Prize Examination in Ophthalmology.

He began his ophthalmology training in West Wales before undertaking posts across the South East of England and a research position at the University of Manchester. He then returned to Wales to complete his Registrar and Fellowship training at the University Hospital of Wales.

Mr Rathod has published several research papers and has presented his work at national and international meetings. He was appointed as a Consultant in London in 2011 before returning to West Wales in 2012. He is currently based primarily in Swansea, while continuing to hold regular NHS clinics and operating sessions in Carmarthen.

An experienced ophthalmic surgeon, Mr Rathod has performed more than 4,000 cataract procedures on patients ranging from four-week-old babies to centenarians. He leads the regional paediatric ophthalmology service across Swansea Bay UHB and Hywel Dda UHB.

Mr Rathod has held several leadership and educational roles within ophthalmology. These have included:

• Regional Educational Advisor for Wales for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists
• Chair of the Specialty Training Committee
• Former member of the Welsh Government Ophthalmic Specialty Advisory Group
• Member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Paediatric Subcommittee
• Chair of the Welsh Ophthalmic Forum

Clinical interests

Mr Rathod has specialist expertise and clinical interests in:

• Adult strabismus (squint) surgery
• Neuro-ophthalmology
• Cataract surgery

He has extensive experience in cataract surgery and treats patients across a wide age range.
