Personal Profile

Mr David Dunlop went to medical school in Birmingham and qualified as a doctor in 1989. He then underwent further surgical training in Birmingham, Manchester and Vancouver before being appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham in 2001.

He specialises in lower limb arthroplasty (joint replacement) surgery performing hip replacements, revisions and resurfacings. Mr Dunlop has been involved with the National Joint Registry since it was established in 2003.

Mr Dunlop's fellowship year in Vancouver concentrated on revision or ‘redo’ hip and knee replacement surgery and was an opportunity to work with international leaders in this field.

He is currently the National Joint Registry (NJR) Regional Clinical Coordinator for the West Midlands Strategic Health Authority. Since he joined the Royal Orthopaedic hospital he has sat on the Infection control committee and facilitated the introduction of routine screening for MRSA.

Mr David Dunlop uses a variety of hip implants ranging from hip resurfacings to complex specialised revision prostheses and proximal femoral replacements for occasional cases where there has been severe bone loss. For first time replacements he offers the choice of hip resurfacing, uncemented total hip replacements with modern bearings or conventional cemented implants and will endeavour to match the best implants to each patient’s individual circumstances and requirements.

Mr Dunlop currently operates at The Edgbaston Hospital and the Priory Hospital in Birmingham. He holds clinics at The Sutton Medical Consulting Centre (Ashfurlong) on Thursday mornings and the Edgbaston Hospital on Monday mornings.

He enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters.  Mr Dunlop is an occasional golfer, tennis player and skier.

He is also part of The Midland Orthopaedic Practice.
