David Grimes is an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon who seeks to provide high quality, personalised care to match the goals of the patients he treats. He has been an NHS consultant at Evelina London and Guy's and St Thomas’ since 2020. He is one of a small number of consultants who provides care to patients with cleft lip and palate and his work at Evelina Cleft Service is dedicated to all areas of cleft lip and palate surgery for both children and adults.
With 20 years of training David is well positioned to provide surgical care for the areas covered by Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the mouth, face, neck and jaws. He particularly enjoys jaw surgery including orthognathic surgery, difficult extractions, jaw cysts, bone grafting and sinus lifts. David also finds providing care for children and young adults especially rewarding which was one of the reasons he became involved in cleft care. He has extensive experience working with other health care professionals to achieve the best results for patients and promotes a team-based approach to put the patient at the centre of their care.
David has degrees in both medicine and dentistry. He worked in dental practice before taking an oral and maxillofacial training post at King’s College Hospital in London where he found his true vocation in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He gained a medical degree at St George’s Medical School and went on to specialist oral and maxillofacial surgical training in the East Midlands. During this time, he undertook a cleft fellowship in Swansea and then the nationally appointed JCST interface cleft fellowship in Birmingham Children’s Hospital. He was awarded his certificate of completion of specialist training in 2020 and immediately started in his current consultant post at Guy’s and St Thomas’.
David has been awarded national prizes related to his clinical work to improve patient care. He has authored multiple papers in peer reviewed journals and has presented this work at national and international meetings.
In his NHS consultant post he trains and supervises doctors at all levels, from those recently graduated to surgeons who have completed specialist training and are learning to perform cleft lip and palate surgery. David also regularly presents educational lectures for dentists and doctors and enjoys these opportunities for both teaching and learning.
David lives in London with his wife and two children.
