Personal Profile

Mr David Cairns is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Aberdeen, a role he has held since 2008. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and completed his specialist training in Orthopaedic Surgery through the West of Scotland Orthopaedic rotation.

In 2007, he was awarded a Fellowship at the Perth Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Centre in Western Australia.

Mr Cairns works as an NHS Consultant at both Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Woodend Hospital. He also holds the position of Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen.

In addition to his clinical and academic roles, he became an examiner for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS Tr&Orth) in 2017. He also serves as the Training Programme Director for the North of Scotland Orthopaedic Rotation, helping to guide and support the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.

Clinical Interests

Treating sports injuries of the upper limb and offers a range of treatments, including: 

• keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery for the shoulder, 
• rotator cuff repairs, 
• surgery for shoulder instability
• shoulder replacements

He also treats conditions of the elbow and hand, with a special interest in elbow tendinopathy—commonly known as tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow.
