Conchubhair Winters is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopist with extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal disorders. He specialises in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, with a particular interest in complex colon polypectomy, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), Barrett’s oesophagus, early gastrointestinal neoplasia and minimally invasive endoscopic therapies.

He graduated in 2009 and completed higher specialist training in Gastroenterology before being appointed as an NHS Consultant Gastroenterologist. Throughout his consultant career he has developed expertise in both luminal gastroenterology and advanced endoscopy, performing a high volume of diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures.

Conchubhair has undertaken advanced fellowship training in therapeutic endoscopy, including colorectal and upper gastrointestinal endoscopic mucosal resection, Barrett’s oesophagus therapy and advanced submucosal endoscopy. His training has included exposure to advanced techniques such as endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), advanced endoscopic tissue resection and endoscopic closure techniques. He is committed to providing minimally invasive treatments that can avoid surgery wherever appropriate while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety.

Within the NHS he has held leadership responsibilities as Endoscopy Clinical Lead, overseeing service quality, patient safety and clinical governance across a large endoscopy service. He has led service improvements including implementation of enhanced safety procedures, governance initiatives and quality improvement programmes, with a strong focus on delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.

Conchubhair is actively involved in multidisciplinary working and leads a multidisciplinary team meetings for patients with complex gastrointestinal pathology. He has significant experience in the assessment and management of colorectal polyps, Barrett’s oesophagus and early gastrointestinal cancers, working closely with surgical, radiological and pathological colleagues to deliver optimal patient care.

Education and training form an important part of his practice. He is committed to teaching medical students, junior doctors, gastroenterology trainees and endoscopy staff, and has been involved in endoscopy training throughout his consultant career, nationally and internationally. He has contributed to the development of local policies, clinical guidelines and educational programmes designed to improve standards of endoscopic practice.

Alongside his clinical work, Conchubhair has a strong academic interest in improving patient experience and outcomes. He is currently undertaking a Doctor of Medicine (MD) research degree at the University of Leeds, focusing on understanding barriers to colonoscopy participation and developing strategies to improve patient engagement with bowel cancer prevention and early diagnosis. His work combines quantitative and qualitative research methods and has been presented at national and international scientific meetings.

His practice is centred on clear communication, shared decision-making and providing patients with an individualised management plan. He believes patients should fully understand their condition, available treatment options and expected outcomes, enabling them to make informed decisions about their care.
