About Christos Toumpanakis
Personal Profile
Dr Christos Toumpanakis is a Consultant in Gastroenterology & Neuroendocrine Tumours (NET) at Centre for Gastroenterology & Neuroendocrine Tumour Unit – ENETS Centre of Excellence of Royal Free Hospital, London, UK, since 2007.
He graduated from Medical School-University of Athens, Greece in 1994, obtained his Specialty Title in Gastroenterology & Hepatology in 2004, following 2 years of training in Internal Medicine and 4 years Gastroenterology & Hepatology in one of the largest Teaching Hospitals in Athens. He also obtained his PhD from University of Athens in 2007. He received a scholarship from Greek Society of Gastroenterology for “Neuroendocrine Tumours” in 2004.
He is also an Honorary Associate Professor at University College of London and has been awarded 7 times, by the 4th Year Medical Students, as “Top-Teacher of the Year”.
Dr Toumpanakis is the deputy lead of Royal Free NET Unit and has substantial experience in all types of NETs and in all available treatment options. Royal Free NET Unit is the largest NET Unit in UK and one of the largest NET Units globally with an active cohort of more than 2,000 NET patients. He has been involved at the area of NETs, since 2000.
He is lecturing on a regular basis in several National & International Conferences and published more than 100 original papers and Reviews in peer reviewed Journals.
Dr Toumpanakis is the current Chair of the Advisory Board of the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (ENETS) steering international and inter-disciplinary research and education projects, member of the ENETS Executive Committee, co-Chair of the Post-Graduate Course of ENETS annual Conference, co-Editor of ENETS CME program, co-Author of UK and Ireland NET Society (UKINETS) & European NET Society Guidelines, associate Editor of “Journal of Neuroendocrinology”, as well as a member of the Advisory Board of the “UK NET patients’ foundation”. For 4 years, he was the Chair of the Program Organizing Committee of UKINETS Conference and a member of UKINETS Executive Committee.
He is leading a NET Clinical Research Group, involving Junior Doctors and UCL Medical Students in NET Clinical research projects. His main research interests include novel NET biomarkers, mesenteric fibrosis, molecular imaging in NETs, and carcinoid heart disease. In 2014, he organized the 1st International Conference for “Carcinoid Heart Disease” in London, which led to the development of an International Network of experts, who published the first ever International management guidelines for Carcinoid Heart Disease in March 2017. He has set up several International research collaborations between NET Units. He has received several grants and awards for his research work. He is the Principal Investigator for many NET Clinical Trials.
Dr Toumpanakis has got significant clinical experience in all general gastrointestinal conditions including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, dysphagia, dyspepsia, celiac disease, chronic diarrhoea and inflammatory bowel disease. He has also been managing patients with congenital immuno-deficiencies who have gastrointestinal problems, in partnership with the Immunology Department of Royal Free Hospital.
He is also a very experienced endoscopist in diagnostic and therapeutic oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopies and colonoscopies.
