About Dr Christopher Smith

Personal Profile

Dr Christopher Smith graduated in 2003 from University of Glasgow Medical School with a medical degree and intercalated science degree, then undertook postgraduate training in the West of Scotland.

Dr Smith has been a Consultant at the RAH since 2013 where he has been Specialty Lead since 2020. Dr Smith has been a significant contributor to NHSGGC’s Diabetes MCN and has been the health board's Secondary Care Lead for diabetes for 3 years. Dr Smith works as a General Physician at the RAH, and does regular clinics managing all aspects of diabetes and general endocrinology. His specialist interests include thyroid, pituitary and adrenal disease, as well as type 2 diabetes, weight loss, cardiovascular risk and antenatal care of diabetes (and pre pregnancy planning).

Dr Smith has presented data on a wide variety of topics including the use of GLP1ra and SGLT2i therapies. He has authored many clinical guidelines for NHSGGC, including the management of type 2 diabetes and the use of continuous glucose monitoring. Dr Smith is a Diabetes UK Clinical Champion having completed the programme in 2016-18. He regularly teaches postgraduate and undergraduate trainees. His contribution has been recognised with Honorary Associate Professor status at University of Glasgow Medical School. He is also a Training Programme Director for higher speciality trainees in Internal Medicine Stage 2 (West Deanery).
