Dr Philbey treats all forms of diabetes, including type 1 and type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and rarer inherited conditions such as monogenic diabetes (MODY). He regularly supports patients who find their diabetes difficult to manage despite significant effort, taking time to understand lifestyle, work patterns, and individual goals in order to optimise treatment and improve quality of life. He has a particular interest in diabetes technology, including continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and hybrid closed-loop (automated insulin delivery) systems. Dr Philbey has played an active role in the NHS England hybrid closed-loop programme, contributing to service development and providing regional leadership for the North of England. This experience enables him to give practical, balanced advice to patients considering advanced diabetes technologies or seeking to get more from their current devices.
Dr Philbey provides specialist assessment and management of thyroid and endocrine disorders, including underactive and overactive thyroid disease, use of Liothyronine and natural Thyroid
extracts, thyroid nodules, and ongoing symptoms despite treatment. He frequently sees patients experiencing persistent fatigue, low energy, brain fog, weight change, or reduced wellbeing, where hormonal or metabolic factors may be contributing.
Bone health and osteoporosis are an important part of his practice, where he offers expert assessment of fracture risk, interpretation of bone density scans and management of osteoporosis and osteopenia in both women and men. His approach prioritises fall and fracture prevention with appropriate use of medications to help patients maintain strength and independence.
Dr Philbey also contributes at a national level as a clinician member of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) Part IX Drug Tariff Independent Advisory Panel, which advises on the medical technologies approved for prescription within the NHS. This role ensures he remains at the forefront of emerging treatments and medical devices.
He is actively involved in medical education and academic endocrinology, with contributions to peer-reviewed diabetes and endocrine publications in international journals such as The American Diabetes Association, national audits, and service evaluations. These academic interests directly inform his clinical practice. He was a Principal Investigator for next generation GLP-1 medications in the REDEFINE2 trial.
Patients value Dr Philbey’s calm, approachable manner and clear communication. He prioritises listening carefully, explaining results in plain language, and ensuring that every consultation ends with a clear and practical plan. His aim is to help patients feel informed, supported, and confident in managing their health - whether addressing complex diabetes, thyroid disease, or ongoing fatigue and low energy.
