Dr Bhashkar Mukherjee is on the UK Specialist Register (GMC) in General Medicine and Respiratory Medicine. He is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, London.
He is a Consultant Physician in Respiratory and General (Internal) Medicine at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) and also at the Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH). His private practice is based at the London Bridge Hospital, Blackheath Hospital and the London Clinic where he sees the full range of adult respiratory patients. His specialist medical interests centre around complex cardiorespiratory disorders.
As part of the Royal Brompton National Pulmonary Hypertension Service, he sees regional referrals for patients with all types of Pulmonary Hypertension (PH). This is a serious condition of the lung blood vessels and right heart caused by a wide range of pathologies and which is only managed in selected sites in the UK.
At Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, as well as practicing general internal and general respiratory medicine, he is part of one of the nationally commissioned centres for management of Interstitial Lung Disease. This is a tertiary referral centre for the diagnosing and treating the range of pulmonary fibrotic disorders with access to Specially Commissioned therapies for these conditions. At St Thomas’ Hospital, he is a key member of the GSTT Pulmonary Embolism Reperfusion Therapies (PERT) team, which is a new multidisciplinary team co-ordinating the expertise of respiratory, haematology, interventional radiology, critical care and surgical specialities to offer pioneering interventional treatments for higher risk pulmonary thrombo-embolic disease. This is a modern and growing area of expertise found only in specialist centres and we increasingly offer a regional service to local hospitals who are treating these acutely unwell patients.
Being involved with the management of specialist conditions of the heart and lung, he also frequently sees regional referrals for the investigation of undiagnosed complex breathing disorders. As part of this, he leads the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) service. This is a diagnostic service to investigate the physiological basis of and follow the course of exercise limitation in many heart and lung conditions. It is also a well-recognised tool for stratifying risk for patients needing surgery and an excellent tool for investigating multifactorial breathlessness and perhaps the most technique to assess general health and fitness.
Dr Mukherjee is part of the critical care team at St Thomas’ Hospital, working in the High Dependency Unit. He has experience in the management of critically unwell patients as well as patients with common medical and respiratory conditions and those with chronic disease.

Dr Mukherjee has active research interests in interstitial lung disease (ILD) and pulmonary hypertension. His recent publications have encompassed these fields and management of covid-related ILD. He is currently supervising clinical researchers in ILD and pleural lung disease.
He has a longstanding interest in medical education. He has been involved in formal teaching at post-graduate medicine courses for doctors preparing for membership examinations for the Royal College of Medicine. He is now Deputy Lead for Stage 2 of Undergraduate Medicine for King’s College London Medical School, where he has responsibility for second- and third-year medical students.
Dr Mukherjee’s wide range of expertise and experience is reflected in the respect he has amongst his professional peers. Based in specialist centres but also from attending international conferences, he collaborates widely with his colleagues to maintain up to date medical knowledge and skillsets and thereby provide the best possible care for patients. He regularly receives excellent feedback from colleagues, students and patients (Doctify).
