About Ben Hornung

Personal Profile

Mr Hornung is a Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary. After completing his basic surgical training in Yorkshire, he undertook a period of clinical research at University Hospital South Manchester, investigating the pathophysiology of pelvic floor pathology. He then completed his higher surgical training in the North West, gaining expertise in General and Colorectal Surgery at all the major tertiary centres.

He has a specialist interest in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery and undertook a fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery in Yorkshire prior to taking up his Consultant post. He is the Lead for Colorectal Cancer at Manchester Royal Infirmary and is currently developing the robotic colorectal service at the Trust.

Mr Hornung has published widely and presented at both national and international meetings. He is actively involved in research and recruits patients to a number of national multicentre clinical trials.

He offers best surgical management founded on evidence-based practice for general and colorectal surgical conditions, including surgery for haemorrhoids, anal fissure/fistula, hernia, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease and bowel cancer.

He also works at the Urgent Care Centre at The Alexandra Hospital which provides a walk-in, self-pay service that patients do not need a GP referral for.
