About Azhar Shaida

Personal Profile

Mr. Azhar Shaida is a Consultant ENT Surgeon at the internationally renowned Royal National ENT Hospital. He attended Cambridge and Oxford University for his medical training, and then trained in London and Cambridge, attaining the FRCS in General Surgery and FRCS ORL-HNS, before being appointed Consultant ENT Surgeon at the RNTNEH in 2002.

He has been awarded an MD degree by the University of London for his research into matrix metalloproteinases.

He is an Otologist/ Auditory Implant Surgeon, dealing with the full range of ear and hearing problems. He is one of the main providers of Paediatric ENT Surgery at RNENTH/UCH. He is Clinical Governance and Audit Lead for RNENTH.

He teaches and lectures at local, national and international courses and conferences, and has published numerous papers.

He examines for medical school finals exams and for the DLO.

He is involved in a number of Otology and Hearing Research projects and is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at UCL Ear Institute. He is a reviewer and Assistant Editor for the Journal of Laryngology and Otology.

Research Interests

Prevention and restoration of hearing loss, and Eustachian tube disorders. Current research projects include an international multi-site study of a new treatment for sudden hearing loss, the genetics of cholesteatoma and hearing preservation after cochlear implant surgery.
