About Dr Ayman Eissa

Personal Profile

Dr Eissa is a Consultant in Pain Medicine in the NHS. After he graduated, he carried out his basic training in Cairo, Egypt. He then came to the UK to carry out his specialist training in the North East of England before coming to Sheffield in 2001, where he has lived and practiced since.

He is the Clinical Lead for the independent provider in Pain Management Services, which is a network of pain consultants that provide community-based pain management clinics nationally on behalf of the NHS. Dr Eissa has also been the Honorary Secretary of the British Pain Society which he held from 2019-2023.

He is also a founding member of the Faculty of Pain at the Royal College of Anaesthetists, and Honorary Secretary of the British Pain Society. Dr Eissa was also a member of the working group that composed the recent guidelines for the use of medical cannabis in the management of chronic pain.

Dr Eissa has a great interest in research and leads a busy research team in Pain Medicine at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. He is currently an international co-ordinator in multi-centre research trials assessing new pain medications. In 2016, Dr Eissa won a national award from Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies, for his research in Pain Medicine. He is also the co-author of a chapter in the Chronic Pain Text Book.

Dr Eissa has a particular interest in the use of cannabinoids for the treatment of chronic pain, and is currently working with an industry partner to design trials for the use of cannabinoids for the treatment of chronic pain.

If you’ve been taking painkillers for a long time, it’s likely they are no longer effective in managing your pain, or are causing unwanted side effects. At your first consultation, your pain management consultant will go through every aspect of your problem and its effects on your daily life. From there, we can then prescribe a course of treatment or combination of treatments to help relieve your symptoms and take control of managing your pain.

Dr Eissa ran a Paediatric Chronic Pain Clinic for over 20 years, and is happy to see paediatric patients that are experiencing pain problems.

Outside of his clinics, Dr Eissa studied Art and Sculpture, and so likes to attend exhibitions and museums. He is also a keen squash player, diver and regularly participates in triathlons.

If you'd like to book in for an appointment with Dr Eissa, you can do so by booking online, or calling the National Enquiry Centre (NEC) whose number is at the top of the page.
