Dr A T Arasu Rayen is a Consultant in Pain Management. He has more than 20 years’ experience in treating wide variety of chronic pain conditions such as complex regional pain syndrome, neuropathic pain, lumbar spinal pain & sciatica, thoracic spinal pain, cervical spinal pain & whiplash, shoulder pain, pelvic pain, pain after surgery & trauma, and complex headaches.

In his clinic, Dr Rayen, with enough background medical knowledge about you from the referral letter and medical notes, takes carful history and does necessary examination, if needed with the help of chaperone. He orders necessary investigation, tries to come to diagnosis and offers full and simple explanation to you about your condition. He tries to achieve pain management holistically with medication advice and adjustment, physiotherapy, injections and psychological therapies. He performs pain relieving injections including epidural injection, facet joint injections, different nerve blocks and joint injections, both under x-ray and ultrasound. He is an expert in using ultrasound for many pain-relieving injections and one of the first to introduce ultrasound guided injections in chronic pain and anaesthesia in Birmingham, UK.
Dr Rayen qualified as doctor in India in 1991 and obtained Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA) in 1994 from Dr MGR Medical University, India after finishing two-year structured course and examination at Stanley Medical College, Chennai, India. He was awarded Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA) in 1997 and fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) in 1998 by The Royal College of Anaesthetists, UK. He was granted Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FFPMRCA) in October 2007. He obtained Masters in Science (MSc) in Pain Management from Leicester University, UK in 2008.
Dr Rayen is interested in medical education and teaching. He continues to teach medical students, junior doctors, GP’s, consultants, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals. He has been an Instructor in Advanced Life Support course, run by Resuscitation Council (UK) for more than 10 years. He has also been an Instructor in Generic Instructor Course run by Resuscitation Council (UK) and Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG) aimed at teaching potential instructors in Advanced Life Support course. It is a standardised national course teaching the principles of adult learning. He was awarded Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education by Dundee University in 2014. To recognise the highest professionalism and dedication in teaching, Higher Education Academy, UK conferred Dr Rayen Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA), of United Kingdom.
Dr Rayen has been an examiner for Final FRCA examinations of The Royal College of Anaesthetists, London UK since 2015. Prior to that he was Primary FRCA examiner of The Royal College of Anaesthetists, London UK between 2012 – 2015.
Dr Rayen has presented and chaired sessions at local, national and international educational meetings at the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the Faculty of Pain Medicine and the British Pain Society. He has been a faculty in local, national and international courses teaching interventional pain techniques using x-rays and ultrasound. He is the founder and one of the regular faculty members on Birmingham Ultrasound in Regional Anaesthesia course at City Hospital Birmingham since its inception in 2005. He was the founder, course director and faculty of ‘Conscious Sedation course’ and ‘Radiology for Anaesthetists course’ at City Hospital. He has been a faculty in ‘Coventry Regional Anaesthesia and Workshop and Lectures - CRAWL’ course since 2015 teaching ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia technique. Dr Rayen was the founding Chair of West Midlands Pain Forum, a forum of Pain Management Consultants in West Midlands.
Dr Rayen has published in national and international journal on chronic pain management subjects. Dr Rayen was the Editor of Pain News, the official newsletter of British Pain Society and co-opted member of Council of British Pain Society between 2014 - 18. Prior to this he was a regular columnist writing on various pain management related medical articles in Pain News between 2010 and 2013.
