Dr Apostolos Koffas is a Consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist with broad experience in the investigation and management of gastrointestinal and liver disease. He currently works as a Consultant Hepatologist at the Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. His NHS practice includes specialist clinics and multidisciplinary management of patients with chronic liver disease. His focus is on providing clear, evidence-based and individualised care, helping patients understand their diagnosis and make informed decisions about their treatment.

Dr Koffas reviews patients with abnormal liver blood tests, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD/fatty liver disease), alcohol-related liver disease, viral hepatitis, autoimmune and cholestatic liver diseases, and cirrhosis, as well as patients requiring assessment of more complex or unexplained liver abnormalities. He has a particular specialist interest in viral hepatitis, complex and advanced liver disease, and has extensive experience in the non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis.

Dr Koffas graduated in medicine from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, before undertaking postgraduate and specialist medical training. Alongside his clinical training, he developed a strong academic interest in liver disease and subsequently undertook clinical research at the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London. His main research interests are chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis D. His work has been published in leading international hepatology journals, and he has presented research at national and international liver meetings.

Dr Koffas is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London and is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He leads teaching within the final year of the undergraduate medical programme and contributes to the clinical teaching, supervision and assessment of medical students and resident doctors. 

Dr Koffas is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom and a Fellow of the European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He is also a member of the British Association for the Study of the Liver (BASL) and the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL). 

Outside medicine, he lives in the Richmond area and enjoys spending time with his family, travelling, swimming, music and films.
