Dr Apostolos Koffas is a Consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist with broad experience in the investigation and management of liver disease. He sees patients with abnormal liver blood tests, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD/fatty liver disease), alcohol-related liver disease, viral hepatitis, autoimmune and cholestatic liver diseases, and cirrhosis, as well as patients requiring assessment of more complex or unexplained liver abnormalities. His focus is on providing clear, evidence-based and individualised care, helping patients understand their diagnosis and make informed decisions about their treatment.

Apostolos currently works as a Consultant Hepatologist at the Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. His NHS practice includes specialist clinics and multidisciplinary management of patients with chronic liver disease. He has a particular specialist interest in viral hepatitis, as well as complex and advanced liver disease. He has extensive experience in non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis (scarring), and in the management and follow-up of patients with chronic liver conditions.

Alongside his clinical work, Apostolos has a strong academic and research interest, primarily in chronic hepatitis B and D and the development of novel approaches aimed at achieving functional cure. He remains actively involved in research and has published in international peer-reviewed journals in the fields of viral hepatitis and liver disease.

Apostolos is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London and is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He leads teaching within the final year of the undergraduate medical programme and contributes to the clinical teaching, supervision and assessment of medical students and resident doctors. He also regularly participates in examinations and clinical training, with a particular interest in developing practical clinical skills and confidence in the management of liver and gastrointestinal disease.

Apostolos lives in the Richmond area with his family. Outside medicine, he enjoys travelling, swimming, music and films, and spending time with his family.
