During the year 1995 to 1996, he achieved the following:
1. Sat for the Diploma in Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, passing on the first attempt,
2. Sat for the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians part 1 exam-passing at the first attempt,
3. Passed the MSc in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine with distinction,
4. Sat the Proficiency and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) exam (the qualification that allows one to practice clinical medicine in the UK) and passed at the first attempt. He joined the Guys and St Thomas' medical rotation, completing his MRCP (UK) in February 1998. His passion was always ophthalmology, and at the end of 1998, he secured a training post.
He has been practicing Ophthalmology since 1998. Having completed two years of training as a Senior House Officer in Ophthalmology: rotating from East Surrey Hospital; Frimley Park Hospital; and Epsom and St Helier Hospitals. He worked as a registrar at Maidstone Hospital, for 6 months. He successfully got a specialist ophthalmologist training rotation with the North London Deanery, spending 1 year at Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals. He then spent a year at Whipps Cross and Harold Wood Hospitals, completing his final three years at Moorfields Eye Hospital, City Road (a tertiary centre with more than 170 consultants where each subspecialty has its own department).
After qualifying as a specialist Ophthalmologist, he undertook an Ocular Adnexal Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital for 16 months. This involved surgical and medical management of complex orbital, lacrimal, and oculoplastics disorders. He did another Fellowship for 6 months in Glaucoma: tube surgery and antimetabolite augmented trabeculectomies, uveitic glaucoma, etc. He practiced independently as a Consultant Ophthalmic and Oculoplastics surgeon within the National Health Service of the United Kingdom from 2007. After that, he worked as a Consultant Ophthalmologist, undertaking different posts, as he wanted to gain as much independent experience as possible with his anticipation of returning to Zimbabwe. His last posting was at Moorfields Eye Hospital, based at the St Georges’ Hospital in Tooting for 12 months.
He returned to Zimbabwe in 2015 and established a practice but returned to the UK in 2020. He is now employed at the Dorset County Hospital as a definitive consultant ophthalmic surgeon. He is passionate about teaching and simplifying and sharing knowledge (annually going to Zimbabwe to train other professionals in ophthalmology surgical techniques), and continuously auditing his surgical outcomes (revealing exceedingly good outcomes).
