Mr Ankur Gupta is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon based in Surrey.  He has been trained at leading international centres of excellence including The University of Oxford and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.   Mr Gupta is known for being a kind, caring and compassionate clinician with over 10 years of experience.  He looks forward to welcoming you to his practice.

Training and Appointment

Mr Gupta grew up in Surrey and attended medical school at the University of Oxford. After medical school he ranked first in the selection process for the academic junior doctor research training programme at The Queen’s Medical Centre. During this time, alongside his clinical training in medicine and surgery, he conducted cutting edge research on corneal anatomy and corneal transplantation. This work was published in leading international Ophthalmology journals.  Mr Gupta was subsequently awarded a place on the highly prestigious and competitive North Thames London Ophthalmology training rotation based at Moorfields Eye Hospital. During this time, he was trained in all the major sub-specialties within Ophthalmology. After his general Ophthalmology training, he proceeded to complete two years of sub-specialty fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in medical retina, oculoplastic surgery and cataract surgery.

Teaching

Mr Gupta is a keen medical educator. He has undertaken a postgraduate certificate in medical education and was awarded a merit. He co-founded the Oxford pre-clinical skills course based at the John Radcliffe Hospital. 

He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Member of the Academy of Medical Educators. He actively trains junior Ophthalmologists. Mr Gupta was awarded a teaching certificate of commendation at Moorfields Eye Hospital and has also attained an NHS Leadership Academy Award in Healthcare Leadership.

Research and Publications

Mr Gupta has conducted high quality science and clinical research work throughout his career. At The Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology at The University of Oxford, he carried out basic science laboratory research on neuro-protection strategies in glaucoma and gene therapy for retinal diseases. His work both here, at Queen’s Medical Centre and Moorfields Eye Hospital has contributed to over 20 peer-reviewed PubMed® listed publications in the leading international journals in the field. Mr Gupta has also presented internationally and nationally at many major conferences in Ophthalmology and medical education.

Prizes and Awards

Prizes and Awards
Mr Gupta won first place at the undergraduate Ophthalmology Conference at The Royal Society of Medicine. He was an author on the team that won the Bausch and Lomb Sustainability Prize at The Royal College of Ophthalmologists Congress (largest Ophthalmology conference in the UK). He was shortlisted for a Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention prize for his work on implementing virtual services in the NHS.
