Dr Macleod is a Consultant Neurologist with broad expertise in diagnosing and managing disorders of the brain and nervous system. He has a particular subspecialty interest in movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, tremor, and other involuntary movements. Clinical Experience

Since August 2019, Dr Macleod has worked as an Honorary Consultant Neurologist with NHS Grampian. Hi role includes diagnosing and treating patients in general neurology and movement disorder clinics, providing inpatient care on the Neurology ward, and being on-call for emergency neurological presentations.

Research and Teaching

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Macleod is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen. He teaches medical students and junior doctors, coordinates evidence-based medicine teaching for third-year students, and conducts research into neurological conditions.

His principal research interest is Parkinson’s disease, with a focus on prognosis — understanding how the condition progresses over time — as well as systematic reviews of existing studies and research into the side effects of epilepsy treatments.

Qualifications and Training

Dr Macleod graduated with honours in Medicine from the University of Aberdeen in 2006. He also also achieved a First-Class intercalated BSc in Medical Sciences and the university’s prize for best thesis. He became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2009. He completed his neurology training in the Institute of Neurological Sciences in Glasgow and in the Department of Neurology at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. His academic qualifications include an MSc in Epidemiology (with distinction) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a PhD in Neurology from the University of Aberdeen, where he developed prognostic models for Parkinson’s disease. He has also undertaken post-doctoral research at the University of British Columbia.

Professional Activity

To date, Dr Macleod has published 36 original research papers in peer-reviewed journals. He remains active in clinical audit and quality improvement, regularly attends national and international neurology conferences, and keeps up to date with the latest developments in the field.

His external roles include membership of the Parkinson’s UK College of Experts and serving on the National Scientific Advisory Committee for Tenovus Scotland.

Personal Interests

Outside of work, he relaxes by cycling, hillwalking, and spending time with his wife and six children and is also active in his local church.
