Dr King was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at the University Hospitals Birmingham in 2015 and is currently based at Birmingham Heartlands and Queen Elizabeth Hospitals. He is experienced in caring for patients with a variety of gastrointestinal conditions such as indigestion, abdominal pain and liver test abnormalities.

He specialises in the assessment and management of liver disease, particularly fatty liver, viral hepatitis and alcohol related conditions.  He provides expert care for patients with all forms of liver and biliary disease, including those with cirrhosis and liver cancer.  

He is an accomplished endoscopist  and works closely with colleagues in radiology and surgery to deliver multidisciplinary care including advanced endoscopy, surgical procedures and assessment for liver transplantation.

Dr King qualified from Imperial College School of Medicine, London in2001 and completed specialist training in hospitals across the West Midlands including advanced training at the Queen Elizabeth Liver Unit.  He was awarded a Medical Research Council fellowship and completed a PhD at the University of Birmingham for undertaking pioneering research into the use of stem cell therapy in liver disease. This included undertaking the first randomised clinical trial using stem cells in patients with cirrhosis.  His continued involvement in current research means his patients can benefit from participation in the latest clinical trials of new developments in liver disease.

He is passionate about training the next generation of specialists and has been appointed as training programme director for Gastroenterology in the West Midlands and training lead at UHB.  He is a  GMC accredited supervisor and is an experienced endoscopic trainer who has been invited to teach on regional endoscopy training courses.
