Personal Profile

Professor Andrew Wardley is an internationally recognised oncologist and clinical researcher whose pioneering work has transformed the care of people with breast cancers across the UK and globally. With more than 25 years of experience in cancer medicine, healthcare policy, and academic leadership, he brings to The Alexandra Hospital a commitment to world-class, research-led, and patient-centred care.

  • Breast cancer — including advanced and early-stage disease, HER2-positive and triple-negative subtypes
  • Lung cancer — offering precision-guided chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy
  • Systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) — expertise in complex regimens and managing treatment toxicity
  • Clinical trials and innovative therapies — ensuring patients access cutting-edge treatments through research partnerships

Professor Wardley integrates genomic profiling, precision medicine, and multidisciplinary collaboration to design highly personalised treatment plans, balancing the best evidence with each patient’s values and preferences.

Academic and Research Leadership

Professor Wardley co-founded the Manchester Breast Centre and the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, where his teams led trials that changed international standards of care. He has held senior leadership roles including:

  • Director of the NIHR Clinical Research Facility, The Christie Hospital
  • Chair, National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Breast Research Group
  • Clinical Expert Advisor, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)
  • Director of Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy, Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance

His research has contributed to major advances in targeted therapy, immuno-oncology, and response-directed treatment strategies that have significantly improved survival rates and quality of life for patients.

Innovation in Cancer Care

Professor Wardley pioneered the UK’s first electronic SACT prescribing system, improving safety and efficiency in chemotherapy delivery. He also led the design of home and community-based chemotherapy services, making treatment more accessible for patients across Greater Manchester. His Equity of Access Programme at the University of Manchester continues to reduce disparities in cancer outcomes, particularly in underrepresented populations.

Leadership and Advocacy

As Executive Chair of the Association of Cancer Physicians, Professor Wardley represents oncologists nationwide, influencing workforce policy, clinical standards, and cancer service delivery. He is also Founder and Chair of Cancer Services Limited, a healthcare innovation company providing expert second opinions and improving access to oncology expertise worldwide.

Professor Wardley’s clinical philosophy combines scientific precision with compassionate practice. Every patient receives care that is evidence-based, ethically grounded, and personally meaningful. His guiding principle — “a question to answer for every person” — captures his lifelong dedication to advancing cancer care through research, equity, and empathy.
