Andrew Tasker is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon based at Great Western Hospital and The Ridgeway Hospital. His practice includes key hole (arthroscopic), open and joint replacement (arthroplasty) surgery to the upper limb with specialist expertise in conditions affecting the Shoulder & Elbow.
Andrew graduated from King’s College London Medical School in 2000 before undertaking basic surgical training in Nottingham and London including at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore. He completed his higher Orthopaedic training in the South West (Severn) prior to undertaking Fellowships in Shoulder & Elbow surgery in Australia and Trauma in Oxford, where he honed his skills in shoulder and elbow arthrosopy, shoulder arthroplasty, soft tissue reconstruction and complex fracture fixation surgery (including open injuries and procedures to promote bone union).
He was appointed as a Consultant in 2014 and has been in full-time practice since. He has a passion for medical education and an interest in the challenges of delivering safe, effective surgical training in the modern healthcare system. Having been departmental Medical Education Lead and subsequently Postgraduate Tutor for Severn Orthopaedic Registrar Teaching, he is currently Training Programme Director for Trauma & Orthopaedics in Severn. He is a European Trauma Course Instructor and faculty on FRCS (T&O) pre-Consultant exam courses.
He is committed to evidence based practice and a principle investigator for Great Western Hospital on national multi centre Orthopaedic trials. As part of his commitment to ensuring the highest standards of patient care and surgical practice, he has been serving on the executive for the Orthopaedic Trauma Society since 2021.
Most upper limb conditions can be treated without the need for surgery and Andrew’s approach exemplifies shared decision, patient centred care with close collaboration between Physiotherapists, Radiologists and Anaesthetists.
Please note he does not perform routine hand surgery.
