Mr Andrew Mitchell is a Consultant Upper GI and Weight Loss Surgeon at Woodlands Hospital in Darlington, where he sees private patients.

He is also an experienced Consultant Upper GI and Weight Loss Surgeon at Darlington Memorial Hospital. He offers a wide range of surgical treatments and has been performing keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery for over 20 years.

His career experience includes more than 1000 weight loss operations. Mr Mitchell studied Medicine at the University of Aberdeen, graduating in 2002. He completed his surgical training in the North of Scotland working in various hospitals. In 2008, he was awarded a Masters degree in Medical Education from the University of Dundee. Mr Mitchell was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2010. He completed his higher surgical training and was added to the UK Specialist Register in 2011.

At the end of his training, Mr Mitchell completed a prestigious Laparoscopic Bariatric fellowship with Professor David Kerrigan’s team in Liverpool. This included over 200 cases with experience of all bariatric operations including gastric bypass surgery, duodenal switch and complex revisional surgery. In 2012, Mr Mitchell was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in Darlington. His NHS clinical practice includes specialist clinics for weight loss surgery and paediatric general surgery. He has developed the bariatric service in the Trust including the introduction of a community-based medical weight management service in 2014. He spent seven years in the role of Clinical Director covering a number of surgical specialties.

Mr Mitchell’s areas of expertise include:

  • Weight loss surgery
  • Surgery for functional gullet/stomach conditions including acid reflux, achalasia and gastroparesis
  • Therapeutic endoscopy
  • Gallbladder and bile duct surgery
  • Hernia surgery

Mr Mitchell has a significant interest in medical education. He provides educational supervision for trainee surgeons in the region and participates in the UK-wide annual selection programme. He teaches and examines medical students for Newcastle University. Mr Mitchell also teaches on various local courses and nationally for the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Outside surgery, his interests include rugby, football, cricket, golf and cycling.
