Mr Andrew Mahon is a highly experienced Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon, specialising in this field since 2006.
He originally comes from South Wales and graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff. He went on to complete advanced specialist training in orthopaedic surgery in the North of England, where he also gained a Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering.
His specialist expertise in hand surgery was further developed through an advanced fellowship year, with training at leading centres including the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Selly Oak Hospital.
Since joining University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire in 2014, Mr Mahon has served as Clinical Service Lead for Hand Surgery. In this role, he has worked with his team to develop and strengthen services, helping to establish Coventry as a recognised centre for hand surgery in the UK.
Mr Mahon treats all aspects of hand and wrist conditions, from common problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome to complex injuries and specialist reconstructive procedures. He has a particular interest in wrist conditions and arthroscopic (keyhole) wrist surgery, having undertaken additional training in France and Germany to refine his techniques.
He also has extensive experience treating musicians and athletes at both amateur and professional level, with an understanding of the specific demands placed on their hands and wrists during performance and sport.
He is an active member of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand and contributed to the 2017 national report Hand Surgery in the UK, produced by the society’s working party.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Mahon is committed to education and training. He regularly teaches surgical skills and delivers lectures to medical students, surgical trainees, and consultant colleagues.
He is also involved in research and has contributed to major clinical studies, including the SWIFFT and DISC trials, which have helped improve the evidence base for hand and wrist treatment.
Outside of work, Mr Mahon is an enthusiastic cyclist and competes in events such as the British 4X Series and enduro mountain biking. He also supports his children in their national-level competitive sports, which further informs his understanding of active patients and athletes.
Mr Mahon is committed to delivering high-quality, personalised care, using his specialist experience to help patients regain function, reduce pain, and return to daily activities.
